sound futures LOGO
30 April 2014
Hello MLE,
We have been been so busy lately… today I post more work to the blog.
This is a logo we designed for Sound Futures and Sound Futures Society, run by Seanine Joyce, who has worked for over 20 years as a professional musician, piano and composition teacher and lecturer and, since 2000, a media and film composer. And also a really cool person. She provides sound and music-led creative training and resources as a fun and effective way to engage children in learning.
The top logo is for Sound Futures, the company's commercial branch. The bottom logo is for the company's sister company, Sound Futures Society, the not-for-profit branch. As they are branches of the same company, they are similar.
This type-based logo has a music note suggested in the shape of the 'd'. It moves up and ahead in an energised and inspiring way. You may notice the crescendo sign, a musical notation meaning accelerated sound. The overall look and feel is reflective of the company: fun and approachable, and also professional and effective.
As they say in Quebec, "A+"

LOGO SHUT DOWN by the public
12 April 2014
Hey hey the MLE,
Just reading my nerdy design blogs. This is quite interesting for a number of reasons. The power of social media, the emotional power vs design power of brands, the power of audience perception of a new brand etc.
Students used social media to launch a campaign to get SFA university to withdraw it's new logo. The new logo took months to create and cost thousands, but the new logo is going in the trash and SFA is sticking with the old logo.
Okay, the new logo is not the most exciting, but I mean really. Some of the most well-loved and well-respected brands were initially launched to melt downs, complaints and crying. People don't like change, but they get used to it. I'm just saying it's a big dangerous to pull a logo so quickly because people are moaning, as this can sometimes mean that a logo can never evolve, or only do so in only safe, uninspiring ways.
The guy who actually designed the original former SFA academic administrator in 1992 in 15 minutes for free. It could be better. Instead of sticking with the old logo, why didn't they at least do some sort of refresh to the old one?
News story here.

ALEX MAZER for toronto city council
10 April 2014
Hiya MLE,
As you know, my very good friend Attiya Khan and her husband Alex Mazer are both straight-up good people. Intelligent, interesting, unique, thoughtful... I could go on and on. They are the type of people who actually make the world a better place. The world could really use more of people like them. Well, Toronto is lucky, as Alex has decided to run for city council. And though we did not design his logo/identity, MOTHandRUST was able to design a promo card for him. You can see it in action below. Go Alex!

KATHRYN MC MANN CONSULTANCY identity
2 April 2014
Hey hey the MLE,
Above is a snapshot of some of the elements of the new identity we developed for the Kathryn Mc Mann Consultancy. She helps her clients understand and leverage some sophisticated and rather forward-thinking marketing ideas and strategies. The identity reflects her consultancy: modern, fresh and approachable. The shortform logo (K Mc M) works well when sized very small, even in low res situations such as branded online video.
Et voila.
