Hello Emelie,
This is a question that always seems to floating around. Just now, I came across yet another article online that addresses it, so I thought it might be interesting to read up and formulate an educated personal opinion.
Back in the Olden Days when I started designing, I did many identity jobs which consisted of logo, business card, letterhead, envelope. Now I hardly ever design a letterhead that is not a Word template and I hardly ever design envelopes either, unless it is for a large company. However, the business card seems to be something that is still in demand, now as much as ever.
So, is the business card dead?
NO! They are:
- Easy to use: People don't need to fumble with some form of technology to pass on information.
- Reliable: They will not fail you like technological alternatives can.
- Memorable: When the design is right they are really resonate.
YES! They are:
- Obsolete: Contact management apps, LinkedIn and the internet in general work better. Often business card info is never actually get entered into a contact list because it's too much hassle.
- Easily lost: No one wants to carry around and keep track of small bits of paper.
- Costly: There is a cost to design and print a business card properly.
My educated personal opinion?
Today business cards are more optional than essential. Use them, as well as their alternatives, and leave it up to the recipient to decide which medium they prefer.
Do you remember
this? Still good.
