MARTIN CREED work no. 1343
26 July 2012
Hey the MLE!
Hope things are well in Vancouver. I mean really, how cool is Martin Creed? He's sort of on fire this year. He's still doing his band thing (which I posted about earlier). And his ballet was cool. And his Work No. 1197 is launching on Friday to announce the opening of the Olympics (where everyone in the land must ring a bell as fast and loud as possible for 3 minutes, starting at 8.12 am). Yes I will be participating.
Anyway, on top of all this, he has designed a restaurant. To quote the wallpaper site with the full article, Work No. 1343 "comprises every single piece of furniture and cutlery in the restaurant - with each one being different.
We will have to go for dinner there next time you're in town.
Over and out,

Hey MLE,
Indeed, the man himself was in Dalston last night to showcase the release of "thinking/not thinking." There was a queue of about 15 min beforehand, which I've never seen at Cafe Oto, but well worth it. Lucky for us, his "sick film" (short film of person after person making themselves sick in a white room) sent the boys in front of us out the door, so we got their chairs.
As you'd expect, his lyrics were spot on: "words words words words words words words words words..." then there was that other song, "fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off..." Included here is the end of the song where he counts from 1 - 100. As someone pointed out, a real tune to sing along to, cause you'd already know all the lyrics.
Love,

M,
He was on the tele last week, and said something like, "working is like pinching yourself to see if you feel something."
I hate to say it, but I often find listening to a well-known artist talk about his or her work annoying. Not Martin Creed. I love hearing him explain how he works, how he thinks, what he does. He is so articulate, approachable, interesting and sincere. Well, at least I think so.
I also like that when he does not know something, he just says, "well, I dunno."
Martin Creed will be at Cafe Oto, just around the corner from my flat, on Wednesday March 2nd to perform "Thinking/Not Thinking," I wish you could be here to come with me MLE, really looking forward.
